Ok, so I've been in Varanasi for a few days now: time to update the troops.
First of all: it really isn't as bad as I'd read or heard. Sure the people are kind of pushy, but then, so were the people in Vietnam. Although the horns are about 3 times louder than they should be, they don't honk as much, and you can feel safe (relatively) while walking down narrow alleys at after dark and during a power outage (these happen a couple of times a day). We've walked down the ghats (the stairs all along the Ganges) and saw the people bathing, washing their clothes, meditating, brushing their teeth etc... We even took a boat ride along the shre to get a better view. We got lost in the narrow alleys, got offered apparently "good quality" hashish by mystical-looking elderly chaps and even saw bodies being cremated (though you really can't see much).
Oh, and Elise was assaulted by a monkey, but I'll let her tell you all about it.

I hate every ape I see
From chimpan-A to chimpan-Zee
Nah, they're cool, but the locals look at you funny when you take pictures of them. A bit like we look at tourists a bit strangely when they take dozens of pictures of squirrels.
They're taking over.
