Well, we made it to Luang Prabang without any troubles. We took the bus at 6:30 am and got here around 5:00pm. So slightly longer than my 6 hour estimate. The road was narrow and snaked up and down and all around the mountains which we couldn't see on account of the haze. Indeed, visibility was down to about a mile (if that) pretty much the entire way. Luang Prabang is quite touristy. Not nearly as extreme as Khao San Road, but getting there. It's like the Khao San Road for old people. And we keep hearing French Canadian accents... which is just weird to our ears. One lady pointed out a gong and called it a "tambour"... sheesh.
We found a really nice place to stay, a bit away from the town center. It's run by a really sweet old lady who doesn't speak any enlish or french. The guide said that rooms were between 5 and 7 $ a night, but she seems to be charging us about a dollar fifty per person per night. We'll see what it turns out to be, but either way, it's dirt cheap for a bit of luxury. Private nicely furnitured room with private bathroom. Nice stuff. We'll be staying here a few days before going further north to Nong Khiaw.

Is it "touristy" but still pleasant (not loud)? Or is it developing ALL the attributes of Khao San Rd and other fine tourist destinations? Funny how that QC accent stands out when you're half a world away, n'est-ce pas? I ran into that when I was 18 yrs old, in Southern Mexico. Friends and I in a cantina ran into a lady friend of my mum & dad.
You're talking of haze with viz. down to a mile or so. Is it very humid? Did you hoof it up to the top of the hill in the 30 plus temperature and high humidity?
Not much going on here. I just finished my 3-day pre-retirement course yesterday; a day with the lawyer, a day with the doctor/shrink and the last day with the accountant. No doubt about it now: I've got to get out of Puzzle Palace soonest; too many things to do and too little time to do it.
Take lots of pix.

What??? The isn't a Fairmont in Luang Prabang? I don't get it? But I guess you can't comeplain for a buck fifty? Hell, can't even buy a bottle of Coke for that price around here.
Hope you are having a blast!
