They say you are what you eat.
All I can say is: "WOOF".
That's right. I ate DOG today. And you know what?... It was pretty damn tasty.
Elise and I were heading back to your hotel, after having visited the Temple of Literature (a 1000 year old university) and the Hoa Lo Prison (The original "Hanoi Hilton", and prison used first by the French colonials to imprison Vietnamese insurgents, and later used by the Vietnamese to imprison US POW pilots... including Sen. John McCain). So we found this small market (or "Cho") that was made up of two alleys. Apart form the usual spices, knick knacs and utensils found in ordinary markets, this one had dogs hanging from hooks and piled on countertops, waiting to be chopped up into tiny tasty bits. Sure it looks a bit strange. They look a little bit like Hellhounds, what with no fur and their teeth showing from having been cooked whole. If memory serves right, we were in Hell Market (actual name).
So what does dog taste like? Well, I'm not sure I could describe the taste, except to say that it tastes like beef in much the same way that snake tastes like chicken. The meat is a bit stringy, and it's pretty fatty, but it's good. You dip a small chunk onto a small mound of salt and spices, and then eat it.
It really wasn't so weird eating dog. Sure, you can see the whole dogs all around you, but it's served in little bite-size pieces, so it could be anything really. All I can say is that I had a harder time eating frog legs.

Bon appétit! I had iguana once but wasn't told till after the meal. It was ok with the accompanying lemon and hot pepper sauce; until then, I thought it was a tough variety of local fish or very stringy chicken. Did Élise join in the local delicacies?
